Project 2 Ideas

Idea 1: Pineapple Observatory

  • This project would consist of putting random test subjects in a room with only a pineapple (or any other random, inanimate object) and a microphone. They will sit there for several minutes and talk about the pineapple.
    • They can talk about what it looks like. Details they start to notice. How it makes them feel. What they think of then they think of pineapples. I also plan to have pieces of pineapple that they can eat if they so choose. They can eat the pineapple and describe the taste or texture. Whatever they want.
  • The video itself will consist of a voice over of the people talking while showing footage of that person staring at the pineapple. 
  • The aesthetic of this work would be very experimental, scientific, and structured. I believe that art can be found within the monotonous order of things and doesn't have to be scripted.
Idea 2: Clown for a Day
  • This video would be a more scripted event. It would focus on a person who is wearing clown makeup and going through their day to day life doing stuff. Normal things like going to the grocery store or sitting in class or walking through campus. The project would focus mostly on the absurdity of being casually wearing clown makeup and a wig. It would also document people's reactions to the clown makeup.
    • There would be more artful shots showing the person applying the makeup and then would feel like more of a run and gun documentary (TruTV style?) documenting the clown doing stuff as the day goes on.

Radio Lab: TIME

What is time? In the Radio Lab podcast the concept of time was extensively fleshed out and left me pondering--what exactly is time? The concept of how there was no standard time until 1850 and the relativity of time was really interesting to me. I actually think about time often and how it's just something that we have kind of fabricated as humans. My visualization and concept of time is that time is simply something that exists within a vacuum for us as humans. Time exists because we exist. If there wasn't life then I don't think there is time. If there is nothing to change, grow, or develop then is there actually time? This makes me wonder if there is time outside of our little bubble of human exploration. Like is there time on Jupiter? There is time here on earth and we see Jupiter change within our earthly perception of time, but does it actually exist for us personally until we can step foot on Jupiter and create that time? Audio Terminology

• Amplitude - basically this is the loudness of a sound • Frequency - basically this is the pitch of a sound • Waveform - the image that represents sound • Audio track - a single audio file or asset • Audio Equalization - adjusting of sound frequencies (commonly the treble and bass) • Sine wave. What does this sound like? - sine waves sound smooth especially compared to square waves • Decibels - decibels are units of measurement to tell the intensity of a sound. Deci means ten and bel is a unit of the measure of power. Therefore a decibel is a tenth of a bel unit. • VU Meter - volume unit meter, it measures and displays the signal level in audio equipment
